I recently had the opportunity to work on a cool little project that blends nature, craftsmanship, and a touch of local conservation—building a bird hide for the South Gippsland Water Board. If you’re ever in the area, it’s worth a visit!
The bird hide sits along the picturesque rail trail, which runs from Meeniyan to Stony Creek. Tucked quietly in the trees, it’s the perfect spot for birdwatching and enjoying the beauty of the surrounding wetlands. Whether you’re an avid birdwatcher or just someone who enjoys a quiet moment in nature, this hide offers an unobtrusive vantage point to spot all sorts of wildlife.
Why a Bird Hide?
The goal of this project was to provide a space where people could observe local wildlife without disturbing their natural habitat. The South Gippsland Water Board, in partnership with conservationists and local communities, has been working on various initiatives to promote both environmental education and sustainability. The bird hide serves as a place for people to connect with nature, learn about the local ecosystem, and, of course, catch a glimpse of the many bird species that inhabit the area.
The Location
Located along the rail trail, the bird hide is just a short stroll from Meeniyan. If you’ve never explored this stretch of the trail, you’re in for a treat. The trail winds through scenic farmland and wetlands, with plenty of spots to rest, reflect, and soak in the views. And the bird hide itself? Well, it’s practically hidden from sight, nestled among the trees and offering a peaceful retreat for both wildlife and visitors.
What You Might Spot
Depending on the season, you could see anything from waterfowl to raptors, and even some of the more elusive species that call the wetlands home. It’s the perfect spot to pause, listen, and just be in the moment with nature.
So next time you’re out on the rail trail, take a detour towards Stony Creek and see what you can spot at the bird hide. It’s a small but meaningful contribution to the local ecosystem, and a lovely way to spend some time outdoors.
